The state of distributed open source funding and what needs to happen next

Video

During my open source career (e.g. Free Software Foundation Europe country coordinator, CEO of the MariaDB Foundation, Debian Developer etc) I have witnessed how open source projects struggle with funding. Not only is getting funding in the first place challenging even for projects with millions of users, but turns our that also managing receiving funding from centralized entities has its own challenges and can end up being harmful to open source projects.

As the chair of the Fuug Foundation and manager at Seravo and AWS I have also seen what challenges face those trying to provide the finances.

In this talk I will give an overview of several new blockchain-based projects trying to make widespread distributed funding a reality, and how they are doing things in a novel way that might help resolve current challenges.
